Cristina Perez Ramirez is a super smallscale farmer/coffee producer who farms on less than ten acres at 1700 masl in Chanjón, Todos Santos Cuchumatán, Huehuetenango.

Now widowed, but supported by her children, Cristina processes coffee using her own de-pulper, drying the coffee around her house. Cristina is a member of treasured Cooperative ASDEFLOR with whom we have been working since 2017. ASDEFLOR: Asociación de Desarrollo Flor del Café (Coffee Flower Development Association is a tiny collective of about 30 members, all of whom belong to the Mam Mayan indigenous community. Mam is still the language used, Spanish being a second-language used only when speaking to mestizos.

The Association also owns a communal wet-mill where most producers process their coffee. The Association members used to be subsistence farmers of maize and frijol and previously many were forced to migrate to the US and send money home. We’re happy to say that many of these community are now able to stay on their land after having planted coffee and having found a market that pays pricing that makes coffee farming viable as a livelihood. Cristina joined Asdeflor just in 2020 after witnessing the success of the members in commercialising their coffee to buyers like us.

Roasted for espresso brewing.

We ship coffee as whole beans by default, if you need your coffee ground, please let us know at the checkout.

Pricing transparency: We purchase parchment coffee directly from the association, quetzals are transferred straight to their bank account upon receipt of parchment at our chosen mill. We pay for transport from Huehuetenango to the mill. We paid Cristina 1700 Quetzals per quintal of parchment (100 pounds) which was approximately 40% above the going price at the time
